Chapter Three
âWhere the fuck are they? Iâd get it if one of them had cold feet, but both?â I run a hand through my hair. âActually, no, I wouldnât fucking get it. Itâs Santo and Shelli. Neither of them would have cold feet. So, where the fuck are they?â I ask my brothers for the millionth time as I check the clock on my watch.
âItâs the curse,â Marcello says.
âMarcel, for the last fucking time, there is no goddamn curse on the De Bellis name,â Gio grunts in reply.
My younger brother has had it in his head that weâre all cursed and shouldnât even consider having relationships, because itâs never going to end well anyway. Personally, I think he watches too many fucking movies.
âFine, donât believe me. But it wonât change the fact that weâre all doomed. Youâll find out eventually when the curse hits you.â Marcello sighs.
âItâs not going to hit me because Iâm not ever going to fall in love. That shit is for people like Santo, not people like me.â Gio points a finger at his chest.
âOkay, this is not helping find him or Shelli.â I dig into my pocket and pull out my flask. Itâs early in the day but is it ever too early for a healthy dose of Cinque? Iâd say not. Taking a swig, I close my eyes as the smooth flavour explodes on my tongue.
Cinque De Bellis whiskey is the only legitimate business my brothers and I own independent of our father. As much as he tried to take over the idea when we were developing it, we all stood firm on the fact we didnât want his filthy hands touching what was ours.
Our old man might be a great businessman. After all, no one gets to the position heâs at without having some smarts about him. But he has this uncanny ability to turn everything dirty. And Iâm certain he would have found a way to use our whiskey to benefit him and his other business dealings. The ones that happen under the radar.
Donât get me wrong, weâre just as involved in that side of the family empire as our father is. But itâs not like any of us had much of a choice. The day we turned thirteen, we were all handed a gun, put in front of a man, and told that it was him or us.
Father of the goddamn year right there.
Gio and Santo did everything in their power to try to keep us younger kids out of it. Tried to convince our father that he didnât need all of us to work for him, but my older brothers were young themselves at the time. Even now, I donât think the old man would ever listen to them. Itâs always his way or the grave. You either fall in line or earn your spot at the morgue.
All of our phones sound out through the otherwise silent room at the same time. I pick mine up off the table.
